Shangri-La Hotel Nanchang's Chinese Restaurant: Zi Yu Xuan
Chinese cuisine is as varied as you'd expect for such a large country but there's no doubt that Cantonese food is one of the most popular members of the Chinese food family, not just in China but around the world. For those who love good Cantonese food (and who doesn't) the Shangri-La hotel has recently opened Zi Yu Xuan, which can easily lay claim to be one of the best places to enjoy fine Cantonese food in Nanchang
The Shangri-La Hotel is enviably located on the banks of the River Gan and diners here can soak in the view across the river, which during the evening is arguably one of the best river views in China. Zi Yu Xuan, on the second floor, is simply but elegantly appointed. It provides a comfortable environment and includes eight private rooms that can each seat up to twelve guests. A very nice touch is the open kitchen where you can see many of the dishes being cooked, especially the roasted suckling pig. Speaking of which...
Of course the key thing for any restaurant is the food itself and in this respect Zi Yu Xuan certainly doesn't disappoint. In addition to the classic Cantonese dishes such as Dim Sum the restaurant offers an amazing roasted suckling pig. This is the only restaurant in Nanchang that has an open oven specifically designed for this kind of dish. The actual meat itself is succulent and the skin is golden and crisp; roasted to perfection.
Much of the credit for the quality of the food at Zi Yu Xuan can be attributed to the chef de cuisine who hails from Hong Kong and, as a result, is able to create the most authentic Cantonese dishes.
And if you think all this is going to break the bank the good news is that prices are very competitive. In fact for the roast suckling pig prices star at just CNY 88/portion with a whole pig only costing CNY 398
All in all, Zi Xu Yuan most definitely deserves a visit.
